Etymology
Aashadd comes from the triliteral Semitic root sh-d-d, which carries the sense of pulling tight, binding, or exerting force. From this root Arabic built the adjective shadeed, meaning intense or severe, and then the elative pattern af'al, giving ashadd, meaning more or most intense. The same root produces the Arabic diacritic name shadda, the mark that shows a doubled consonant, literally a tightening of the letter.
