Etymology
فئة comes from the Arabic root ف-ي-أ, tied to the verb فاء (yafī'u), meaning to return. Classical lexicographers described a فئة as the band of people a fighter falls back on for support, so the word first meant a group one returns to. That sense later narrowed to the modern, more neutral meaning of a category, class, or faction of people.
