Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root غ-و-ر, whose base sense is sinking, descending, or plunging downward. The simple Form I verb غَارَ described the sun setting or water sinking into the ground. Form IV, أَغَارَ, added a causative force: to make something plunge suddenly. Because raiders were pictured as horsemen plunging suddenly upon a target, the word came to mean a swift attack.
