Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ʾ-m-r, whose core sense is command or order. The Form III verb āmara means to consult or plot with someone, and mu'āmarah is its verbal noun, literally a mutual ordering or plotting together. Over time this narrowed to its current sense of a secret plan against someone. This is a Semitic root, not an Indo-European one.
