The verb comes from the Proto-Semitic root *ʔ-k-l, meaning to eat. The same root gives the Hebrew אָכַל and the Akkadian akālu, both with the same sense. Arabic built a wide family of words on it, from the noun أَكْل for food to مَأْكول for what is eaten.
