Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root l-gh-w, tied to the noun لَغْو, meaning idle talk, nonsense, or something void. In Form IV the root takes a causative sense: to render a thing void. From canceling talk the meaning widened to canceling contracts, laws, and events.
