Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root r-w-d, meaning to seek out or roam in search of something. In its oldest use, the رائِد was the scout a tribe sent ahead to find water and pasture. The sense then broadened to anyone who goes first into new territory, and today it covers pioneers, leaders, and the military rank of major.
