أَنْكَر comes from the Semitic root ن-ك-ر, which carries the idea of not recognizing or treating something as unfamiliar. The base verb نَكِرَ means to fail to recognize or to find something strange. The Form IV pattern adds a causative sense, so أَنْكَر means to treat a fact as unrecognized, that is, to deny it. The root is old and shared across Semitic languages, not traceable to an Indo-European source.
