Etymology
Damir comes from the Arabic root d-m-r (ض-م-ر), which carries the sense of hiding or concealing something within. The noun pattern faʿil turns that root into a word for the thing hidden inside a person: the private moral sense that others cannot see. Grammarians later borrowed the same word for pronoun, since a pronoun also stands in for and conceals a fuller noun. There is no reliable link to an Indo-European root, since Arabic belongs to the Semitic family.
