Etymology

أَيْس is an old Arabic noun meaning existence or a thing that exists. Classical grammarians treat it as the source of the negative particle لَيْسَ, contracted from لا أَيْسَ, "there is no being." It survives mainly in philosophy and in the fixed phrase "من أيس وليس," used for something fetched from existence or non-existence.
