The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root خ-ب-ر (kh-b-r), which carries the sense of knowing, testing, and being informed. The pattern فَعِيل (faʿīl) turns the root into an intensive form, marking someone deeply versed in a matter. The same root gives خَبَر (news) and خِبْرَة (experience). In Islamic usage الخَبِير is one of the names of God, meaning the All-Aware.
