Etymology
The root ʾ-y-ḍ carries the idea of returning or recurring. The verb آضَ means to return, and its verbal noun أَيْض means a returning. From the same root comes the everyday adverb أيضاً, also. Modern Arabic took up أَيْض for metabolism, the body's continual chemical turnover, where matter is built up and broken down in repeating cycles.
