Etymology
حَقّ comes from the Semitic root ḥ-q-q, whose base sense is cutting and engraving, and so fixing something firmly. From a thing made fixed and settled, the meaning moved to what is established as true and what is justly owed. The same root gives Hebrew ḥoq, a statute or decree, and the verb ḥaqaq, to engrave or to lay down a law. Arabic kept both branches: حَقّ as truth and حَقّ as a legal right.
