Etymology

حَدَثَ derives from the Proto-Semitic triliteral root *ḥ-d-ṯ, whose core sense is 'to be new, to come into being.' From this notion of newness the Arabic verb developed the meaning 'to happen, occur, take place' — i.e., for something new to come about. The same root yields حَديث ('new; speech; Hadith') and حَداثة ('modernity'), all bound by the idea of newness. Cognates appear across Semitic, e.g. Hebrew חָדָשׁ (ḥādāš) 'new' and Akkadian edēšu 'to be new.'
