Etymology
Formed on the Semitic triconsonantal root و-ح-د (w-ḥ-d), 'to be one, single, alone,' cast in the active-participle pattern فاعِل (fāʿil), literally 'being one/single.' The same root gives وَحيد ('sole, lonely'), وَحْدة ('unity, unit'), and تَوحيد ('declaring God one, monotheism'). It is distinct from أَحَد (ʾaḥad, 'one') of the related root ء-ح-د, used in some counting and negative contexts.
