Etymology
أَيْنَ is an inherited Semitic interrogative adverb of place, built on the old interrogative base that also yields أَيّ ('which'). It is treated in Arabic grammar as an indeclinable adverb (ظرف مكان مبني) frozen with a final fatḥa. Cognate interrogatives of place and direction are found across the Semitic family.
