Etymology
شُكْر is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of the verb شَكَرَ 'to thank, be grateful', built on the Semitic triconsonantal root ش-ك-ر (š-k-r). It denotes the act and state of acknowledging a benefit or favor. In Islamic usage it acquired strong theological weight as the virtue of gratitude toward God, and the word spread as a loan into many languages of the Muslim world.
