Etymology

From the Proto-Semitic root *ʾ-ḫ-r meaning 'to be behind, come after.' Built on the elative pattern ʾafʿal, آخَر literally conveys 'the one coming after / further back,' hence 'other, another.' It is suppletively paired with the feminine أُخْرَى, and the same root yields آخِر 'last' and تَأَخَّرَ 'to be late.'
