Etymology

أُخْرَى is the feminine of the elative adjective آخَر, both built on the Semitic root ʾ-kh-r, which carries the sense of being behind, late, or coming after. From the idea of what follows or stands apart grew the meaning 'other.' The feminine takes the فُعْلَى (fuʿlā) pattern, the regular shape for elatives in the feminine.
