Etymology
صَدِيق comes from the triliteral Semitic root ص-د-ق (ṣ-d-q), which means truth, sincerity, and honesty. The same root produces صِدْق (truth), صَدَقَ (to speak the truth), and صَدَقة (alms). A صَدِيق is literally one who is true to you, a sincere companion. Arabic is a Semitic language and has no Proto-Indo-European root.
