Etymology
Arabic bāb means door or gate and goes back to a common Semitic root for an entrance. The same root appears in Akkadian bābu, which survives in the name Babylon, from Bāb-ilim, the gate of the god. The word is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
