بَأْس comes from the Semitic root b-ʾ-s, which carries the idea of hardship and adversity. From this root Arabic forms a cluster of words about misery and distress, and بَأْس itself extends to the force or might that inflicts harm, especially in war. The same root gives بُؤْس (misery) and بائِس (wretched). The harm sense survives in the everyday phrase لا بأس, literally 'no harm.'
