Etymology
تَمَنَّى is the Form V verb built on the Semitic root م-ن-ي, whose older sense is to apportion or measure out. The same root yields أُمْنِيَة, a wish, and مَنِيَّة, fate or death, both turning on the idea of what is allotted to a person. So to wish is, at root, to long for the share one hopes will fall to oneself.
