مُجَدِّد is the active participle of the Form II verb جَدَّدَ, 'to renew,' built on the Semitic root ج-د-د that ties to newness. The same root gives جَديد, 'new,' and تَجْديد, 'renewal.' The mu- prefix marks the agent, so the word names the one who renews. The root is Semitic, not Indo-European, and an older sense of it is 'to cut.'
