Etymology

كَلِمَة comes from the Semitic root k-l-m, which links the ideas of speaking and wounding. The same root gives kalām, meaning speech, and the verb kallama, to address someone. The feminine ending marks a single unit, so a kalima is one piece of speech, that is, a word.
