Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root w-d-d, which ties together the ideas of love and of wishing. The same root yields the noun wudd (affection) and the adjective wadūd (loving), and it named Wadd, a pre-Islamic Arabian deity of love. In religious use al-Wadūd is one of the names of God, meaning the Loving.
