Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ḥ-ṭ-m, which carries the sense of breaking, crushing, or smashing. Classical Arabic already used the simple verb ḥaṭama for breaking something, and the intensive Form II ḥaṭṭama for smashing it violently. Form V taḥaṭṭama adds a reflexive prefix to that intensive stem, turning the meaning inward: instead of smashing something, the subject itself ends up smashed or shattered.
