Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root dh-kh-r (ذ خ ر), whose verb dhakhara means to store up or save something for later use. The noun pattern faʿīla turns this into 'a thing that has been stored,' which narrowed in modern usage to ammunition kept in reserve for fighting. The same root gives the common verb iddakhara, to save money.
