Etymology
قاطَع comes from the Semitic root ق ط ع, which carries the basic sense of cutting. Arabic builds it on the Form III pattern فاعَل, a template that adds a long ā after the first root letter to mark an action aimed at or shared with another party. That shift turns plain 'cut' into 'cut off dealings with someone': boycotting a place, severing ties, or cutting a person off mid-speech.
