Etymology
مال comes from the Semitic root m-w-l, which carries the idea of possessing wealth. In early usage it often meant livestock and herds, the main form of wealth among nomadic Arabs, before it broadened to money and property in general. From the same root Arabic later built words for financing, such as mawwala and tamwīl. The word also spread as a loanword into Persian, Turkish, and Urdu, where it still means goods or property.
