Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ث-ن-ي (th-n-y), which means to fold, double, or repeat. The ordinal 'second' grew from this sense: the second thing is the one that doubles the first. The same root gives Arabic 'ithnān' (two) and 'thanā' (to bend). It is not related to any Indo-European root.
