Etymology

فَكَّر is the Form II verb built on the Semitic root f-k-r, which carries the sense of thought and intellect. Doubling the middle consonant in this form adds a deliberate, sustained quality to plain thinking. The same root gives the nouns فِكْر (thought) and فِكْرَة (idea). Classical Arab lexicographers linked the root to فرك, 'to rub,' picturing thought as turning a matter over in the mind.
