Tafkīr is the verbal noun of the form II verb fakkara, meaning to think hard or to ponder. Both come from the Semitic triliteral root f-k-r, which carries the sense of thought and reflection. The taf'īl template regularly turns form II verbs into nouns that name the action. So tafkīr names the act of thinking itself.
