أَعْجَبَ is the Form IV (causative) verb built on the triliteral root ع-ج-ب, which carries the sense of wonder. The base verb عَجِبَ means to be amazed. The Form IV pattern makes something cause that wonder in a person, hence to please or to impress. From the same root come عَجِيب, meaning strange or wonderful, and إِعْجَاب, meaning admiration.
