Etymology

تَمَكَّنَ is the Form V (تَفَعَّل) verb built on the triliteral root م ك ن. Form V is the reflexive of Form II مَكَّنَ, 'to enable, to empower', so the verb means roughly 'to become enabled' and thus 'to manage to'. The same root carries مَكَان 'place' and مَكِين 'firmly established', tying ability to the idea of holding firm ground. Some scholars link this root to the older Semitic root k-w-n, 'to be, to be firmly set'.
