Ajīb comes from the Semitic root ʿ-j-b, which carries the core sense of astonishment or wonder. The base verb ʿajiba means 'to be amazed,' and ajīb is built on the faʿīl pattern, a common shape for adjectives that describe a quality strong enough to provoke a reaction in an observer. The same root gives Arabic ijāb (admiration) and muʿjab (fan, admirer). As a native Semitic root, it has no Indo-European ancestor.
