Etymology
Kafala comes from the Arabic root ك-ف-ل (k-f-l), whose verb kafala means to support, guarantee, or take responsibility for someone. The word follows the faʿāla pattern, which turns a verb into a noun naming the act or state it describes. It has long been a technical term in Islamic law for suretyship and guardianship, and in the twentieth century it also came to name the labor-sponsorship systems used in several Gulf states.
