Etymology
The verb comes from the triconsonantal Semitic root ب-ق-ي (b-q-y), which carries the idea of what is left and what endures. The same root gives بَقاء (survival, permanence) and the divine name al-Bāqī, the Everlasting. It is a defective Form I verb, with the final root letter a weak ya.
