Word family
Etymology
طَرِيقَة comes from the Semitic root ط-ر-ق (ṭ-r-q), which means to knock, beat, or strike. The same root gives طَرِيق, a road, understood as a path beaten by feet. From the idea of a trodden path the word shifted to mean a way of doing something, a method or manner. The word later spread through the Islamic world and named the Sufi orders, each a spiritual path.
