خاصّ comes from the triliteral root خ ص ص, which carries the idea of singling something out or setting it apart. It is the active participle of the verb خَصَّ, 'to allot to one in particular, to concern specifically.' From 'set apart' the word grew two everyday senses: 'special, particular' and 'private, personal.' The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
