Etymology

إِذْن comes from the Semitic root ʼ-dh-n, which also gives أُذُن, 'ear.' The sense runs from hearing to heeding: to give someone your ear is to grant their request. The word is the verbal noun of أَذِنَ, 'to permit.' It has no Indo-European origin.
