Etymology
سَيِّدَة is the feminine of سَيِّد, 'master' or 'lord.' Both come from the root س و د (s-w-d), tied to the verb سَادَ, 'to rule' or 'to prevail.' The masculine form goes back to an older سَيْوِد, in which the medial و assimilated to the following ي and produced the geminate. The feminine ending ة then yields the word for a lady or madam.
