The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ش ك ل (sh-k-l), which carries ideas of form, shape, and resemblance. When things resemble one another they become hard to tell apart, so the root also covers confusion and ambiguity. مُشْكِلَة is the feminine active participle of the form IV verb أَشْكَلَ, meaning to be unclear or ambiguous. A problem is therefore, in origin, a thing that confuses.
