Etymology
مَاتَ comes from the common Semitic root m-w-t, 'to die,' reconstructed for Proto-Semitic as *mawt-. The same root gives the noun مَوْت, 'death.' Close relatives survive across the family, including Hebrew מֵת and Akkadian mâtu. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European connection.
