Etymology
طَبْع comes from the Semitic root ṭ-b-ʿ, whose base sense is to stamp, press, or imprint. The same root gives the verb ṭabaʿa, 'to print,' and maṭbaʿa, 'printing press.' The link is the old idea that a person's nature is stamped into them. Hebrew keeps the cognate ṭevaʿ, which also means 'nature.'
