Etymology
دائِم is the active participle of the verb دامَ, 'to last,' from the triliteral root د-و-م. The root carries the core sense of continuing and enduring. Because it is a hollow root with a medial و, the participle places a hamza where the weak consonant would stand, giving دائِم.
