Etymology
دَوام is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of the hollow verb دَامَ, يَدُومُ, meaning to last or continue, built on the Semitic triliteral root د-و-م. In classical and formal Arabic it kept the abstract sense of continuance or permanence. In modern everyday speech across the Levant, Gulf, and Egypt it narrowed to a very concrete use: the fixed hours one attends work or school each day, since those hours are what recur and endure day after day.
