Etymology
بَطّارِيَّة is a loanword. Arabic took it from Italian "batteria" or French "batterie" as European military and technical vocabulary spread through the region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Those European words trace to French "battre," to strike, which first named a set of guns fired together and later a set of linked electrical cells. Arabic kept the electrical sense, and the borrowed ending happened to match the native feminine noun pattern -iyya, so the word slotted easily into Arabic grammar.
