Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral Arabic root ف ع ل (f-ʿ-l), meaning "to do" or "to act." Doubling the middle consonant produces the فَعّال pattern, an intensive adjective form used for something that acts strongly or habitually. So فعّال describes a person or thing that does its job with real force or consistency, hence "effective."
