Etymology
Udhun goes back to a Proto-Semitic word for ear, reconstructed as *ʾuḏn-. The same root appears across the Semitic family with almost no change in meaning. Arabic later built a whole cluster of words from this root around the idea of hearing and heeding, including the call to prayer and the word for permission. The link is simple: what reaches the ear is what a person grants leave to be heard.
